Secondary umlaut was umlaut before certain clusters like ht, or in syllables not immediately preceding the triggering *i, *j. Additionally, Vulgar Latin /ɛ/ was rendered in loanwords into MHG as /ɛ/ (as in zëdele).",

"etymology_text": "The letter ë indicates the sound /ɛ/, which is distinguished from ẹ /e/ and — in Upper German dialects — from ä /æ/. All of these were usually spelt e in the manuscripts, though for /æ/ the spellings a and aͤ also occur.\n/ɛ/ usually derives from West Germanic *e (as in ëȥȥen) and *i (as in lëben), in Central German also from secondary umlaut of *a (which is Upper German /æ/, as in mähtec), while /e/ generally derives from primary umlaut of *a (as in nẹnnen). Secondary umlaut was umlaut before certain clusters like ht, or in syllables not immediately preceding the triggering *i, *j. Additionally, Vulgar Latin /ɛ/ was rendered in loanwords into MHG as /ɛ/ (as in zëdele).",
